At the end of November, members of Manchester Friends of the Earth and Manchester Greenpeace, under the Stop Esso banner, arrived at Esso's depot in Salford Quays. Smartly dressed, the activists proceeded to hand out "Hotline" - a newsletter for Esso employers... but produced by the campaign to get Esso to acknowledge global climatic change is a problem and to follow all the other major petrol companies by investing in alternatives to using fossil fuels.
