Safe Surfing

Protecting your computer from a virus is plain common sense. (And if you have an "always on" connection, it's equally important to ensure you have a firewall.) But deciding which anti-virus software to install may not be straight-forward. So I'm pleased to let you know about "AVG" which is available for free for life for MS Windows platforms. Although there is a professional version of AVG, the free version should be suitable for the vast majority of users. I've field tested the free version for several months and it does indeed catch those viruses I have been sent by email.

Anti-virus software is meaningless unless you keep the "virus definition files" up to date. Unlike several other anti-virus software programs you also get updates free for life for AVG. Another bonus! But I note in passing that although you can download the new virus definition files piece by piece (eg by using Real Download - very nifty if you've big files to download but only like to logon to the Internet for short periods of time) you then have to move the downloaded file to the place you installed AVG which is a little more tricky than, say, downloading an update program for Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) which you can just run. But it's a most minor point and most people would be happy with just clicking on the "Update" button from the AVG console centre and waiting for the (1-3Mb depending on new updates) download.

AVG can be downloaded from the Grisoft web site - it's about 5Mb to download but well worth it!
