Local Green Wins National Award

STOP PRESS: Group nominated for 2004 award

Manchester Friends of the Earth's coordinator, Graeme Sherriff, had the honour this summer (2003) of receiving the "Earth Movers" award, a prize given by national Friends of the Earth to recognise outstanding achievements from within its network of groups. Graeme collected the prize in September at the organisation's national conference in Leicester. The award, in the "inspirational voice" category, is primarily for the group's work in Longsight talking to community groups about transport and the problems they have getting around.

The project report, which has just been published, will kick off campaigning work to try to improve the situation. Other achieve-ments of the group were also in the nomination, including their enhanced web presence and its prominent profile in the local media.

Party for the Planet

At the end of September, the group held a "Party for the Planet" at the Big Hands club on Oxford Road (see photo). With three local bands and a comedian donating their time and playing for free, the group raised a staggering £750 and raised their profile.
