STOP PRESS: Despite Zara agreeing to withdraw all furs from their shops in the Spring they have started to sell furs again

The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT-UK) has launched a campaign against high street retailer ZARA over their sale of rabbit fur garments. The use of rabbit fur has increased in high street stores over recent years as other fur becomes less popular. Rabbit fur is marketed as a "by product" of the meat trade, "no different to leather". Clearly to many people the factory farming and slaughter of any animal for their flesh or fur is not acceptable, but the "by product" issue is also a myth - farming of rabbits is only profitable because both meat and fur are used. Rabbits are kept in battery cages, denied the ability to breathe fresh air or run or hop, before being slaughtered at just 8 weeks old.

The sale of rabbit fur in high street stores also makes all fur acceptable, something CAFT works hard against. They recently persuaded Schuh to withdraw rabbit fur boots and will soon launch a new campaign against rabbit fur generally.

They are also in negotiations with the UK section of ZARA who have offered to fly in a representative from their Spanish head office to meet CAFT - a sign they are getting worried!

The anti-fur group are keeping the pressure on during these important negotiations to show that they want ZARA to agree to stop selling all real fur in their UK stores. Please support their protests every weekend outside ZARA in Manchester city centre (near Marks and Spencer) or Liverpool (Church St) and write to Mike Shearwood, Managing Director, ZARA UK, 120 Regent Street, London W1B 5FE (Tel: 020 7851 4300, fax: 020 7851 4301)
