Injured Protester Guilty of Bodily Harm
Martin Shaw, an environmental campaigner who spent several years in Manchester before moving to Spain, one of several anti-capitalist protesters who took part in June 2003 in a road blockade against the G8 meeting in Evian, Switzerland when police cut the rope that held him and he fell 20m to the ground (background), has been found guilty of endangering life by a Swiss court. Another protester, Gesie Wenzel, received a 10 day sentence, suspended for two years, is appealing the decision. The group of protesters are also planning to ensure the Swiss police are tried for bodily harm.
Martin commented, "This [guilty verdict] is part of an attempt to brutalise and intimidate those who resist [the authorities]. Peaceful protest is becoming an act of terrorism under new EU legislation and it is truly terrifying to see the increasing repression of dissent.
