The romance between local recycling company EMERGE and the district of Hulme will reach new heights of passion this Valentine's Day. EMERGE Recycling are to launch an innovative new recycling service for Hulme as a token of their affection with help from the Lord Mayor of Manchester.
The affair between not-for-profit EMERGE and the Hulme area began in 1997 when EMERGE moved into new offices in Hulme. Even though the relationship has become a long distance one (the company are now based in Openshaw), the flames of passion have not dimmed. EMERGE still lovingly collect recyclable materials from Hulme households, and Hulme is now EMERGE's first choice for piloting an exciting new scheme to provide recycling facilities to thousands of people living in flats.
The new, specially modified recycling bins which are being fitted in communal areas in flats will be launched by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Roy Walters, at a special ceremony in Hulme on St. Valentine s Day.
Danny Chivers, Community Liaison Worker at EMERGE, said: This new service is absolutely vital. It s difficult to collect recyclable material from individual flats, so until now recycling hasn t been easy for thousands of people in Manchester. By installing these new bins we re hoping to tackle this, and to try to reduce Manchester s growing waste problem.
Currently only 4% of Manchester s waste is recycled. Huge amounts of valuable resources are being wasted, and environmental and health problems from landfill sites are increasing. The Environment Agency has found possible links between living near landfill sites, and increased risk of birth defects and certain cancers. We need to encourage more and more people to reduce, re-use and recycle their waste, and provide them with the facilities to do so.
If successful in Hulme, the bins will be introduced to flats across the city. EMERGE are also recruiting volunteer Recycling Champions to help publicise this and other recycling services, and provide a closer link with the local community. If anyone in Manchester is interested in having the new bins installed at their flats, or in becoming a Recycling Champion, they should contact EMERGE.
