In Manchester, the council will deliver the new services in partnership with their waste contractor G.M. Waste and with Manchester's home grown community recyclers, Emerge Recycling. Manchester City Council will be responsible for publicity and the support telephone service, Emerge will deliver the expanded service to Longsight, Levenshulme, Rusholme, Fallowfield, Hulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range, Blackley, Charlestown, Cheetham, Lightbowne, Moston, Crumpsall and Harpurhey [and GM Waste...?]. These lucky homes will get a fortnightly box service, called "Kerb It!", for glass, cans, paper and textiles/shoes from their doorstep.
Anybody especially keen on recycling in their locality is encouraged to join Emerge's "Community Recycling Champions volunteer network". Emerge also offer advice and info on the 3Rs including work placements, voluntary work and research opportunities for students. They would also like your views on charging for "residual" (non-recyclable/compostable) waste.
Lucy Danger of Emerge said, "There are currently very few schemes operating this kind of 3-way partnership so it will be interesting to see how the relationships develop. Who knows, hopefully this will prove to be a constructive solution to the challenges presented by waste management in Greater Manchester - so watch out for 'Kerb It'."
