P E A C E

This area of the Networking Newsletter will draw together events and news on peace issues. Not surprizingly this currently concentrates on opposition to the Iraqi war and ongoing occupation but we are eager to expand this to cover all peace related issues.

No to Bush Visit

STOP PRESS: Report on Manc demo

George W Bush came to Britain for a state visit in mid-November. Tony Blair invited him, we didn't. Bush should have known that he would not be welcome here - and he was given a reception he'll never forget.

What will be the effect of "Regime Change"?

Noam Chomsky, in a London talk organized by Red Pepper, pointed out how close the world came to nuclear war during the Cuban missile crisis - just one word away from nuclear destruction: US President Kennedy had imposed a quarantine on Cuba and Russian ships were approaching the quarantine border, accompanied by submarines carrying nuclear missiles. The authority to use these missiles was distributed, as it also is in the US, down to local commanders with three having to agree to launch a nuclear missile. Two did, but one, Vassily Arkhipov, refused. As Chomsky says, "he ought to get 5,000 Nobel Peace Prizes - he saved the world from destruction". If just one nuclear missile had gone off there would have been a US response taking out Moscow and the Russians would have retaliated, leaving at least the northern hemisphere completely untenable to life for many decades. And the reasons behind the Cuban crisis? "Regime change" and "international terrorism".

We hope to add more initiatives shortly. Unfortunately, we can't recommend that any, or even doing all, of these will stop the war...
